Hybrids and electric vehicles may cause problems for repair shops in the future because many are not set up to service those types of vehicles. More than 40% of independent installers said that their garages were not equipped to service hybrids, while the rest said they could not repair or maintain electric vehicles.

Hybrids and EVs such as the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, both of which you can find at either a Cincinnati Ford dealer or a Jersey City Chevy dealer, have fewer engine belts, filters and fuel system parts, but have more sensors, actuators and advanced components and most of which are not found on a conventional vehicle.

In 2009 Hybrids and Evs represented less than 3% of the new vehicle sales and it will more than likely take several years before owners can obtain parts and service in the independent aftermarket.

Due to the small number of these vehicles on the road and the likelihood of their being serviced at the dealership with original parts, manufacturers are not tooling up to produce the replacement parts these vehicles will need in the future, and aftermarket service professionals are not seeking out the training and equipment required to maintain and repair these vehicles.
